Cultural Studies of the Middle East at the Universities of Bamberg and Erlangen

Bilingual Elite Master’s Programme “Kulturwissenschaften des Vorderen Orients/Cultural Studies of the Middle East” at the Universities of Bamberg and Erlangen – Make an early start for a professional career in an academic setting

The Master’s programme focuses on cultural diversity and historical entanglements that shaped Middle Eastern societies to this day. Going far beyond common language frontiers and transcending single-discipline perspectives this programme offers a new and challenging approach to talented and highly motivated students. It is Germany’s first elite course of study in this field.

The core philologies of the Middle East (Arabic, Persian, Turkish and Hebrew) provide a basis for further studies on diversity and historical change in this region. Students encounter theoretical concepts and conduct research on a highly advanced academic level. In addition to the base curriculum, students may select among five areas of specialization: History, art and archaeology, religious studies, language and literature, or linguistics. Student’s choice of specialization determines the focus of their coursework and the direction of their Master's thesis.

Graduates will be able to communicate in academic settings and professionally conduct excellent, interdisciplinary research – skills essential for continuing on at the PhD level. This master’s programme is sponsored by the Elite Network of Bavaria and jointly hosted by the Universities of Bamberg and Erlangen.
